YOUR DRIVING LICENCE Before you can learn to drive you must obtain a provisional driving licence. You can apply for your provisional licence up to three months in advance of your 17th birthday. If you are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate, you are able to take driving lessons from the age of 16 and may apply for your licence up to three months before your 16th birthday. APPLYING FOR A PROVISIONAL LICENCE
You can apply for your first provisional driving licence on the DirectGov website. You can also apply by post. In this case you will have to obtain the D1 application form that is available from Post Office branches. As of September 2016 the provisional licence costs £34.00 for an online application or £43.00 if application is made by post.
